I plan, create and implement lots of special programs outside of school hours

Even though I taught in many schools in my experience, I never stopped going above and beyond to inspire and encourage my students to involve in community service.

I have put my hard effort, interest, involvement, commitment, and dedication to bring development among the students. For that, I have been rendering my service “above and beyond” from 1996 onwards until this date the requirements of my role are to ensure my students get the real-life experience and quality education that I feel they deserve.

As I believe that “service builds strong leadership and life skills” and “action speaks louder than words”, I always involve my students in community and voluntary services since 1996. Not only do I make my students involved in community and voluntary services, but also I personally have been involved in lots of community service, voluntary and charity services. Attached below is a detailed letter provided by the Correspondent of Siddhartha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, madam Jayabharathi (Mobile Number: +91-98652 12020) stating all of my contributions in the school during my employment period from 1996 to 2010 as a full-time and part-time teacher.

1996-2010 (While I was a full-time and part-time teacher)

As most of my students were first-generation students pursuing education, there was a lot of strain given on their better understanding. I showed my efficiency to identify the hot spots in learning and facilitate the students to love the subjects. For the students who were financially poor and academically good, I rendered my voluntary service out of school hours to make 100% results not only in Mathematics but also in all other subjects. Every year more than 10 students benefited from my free teaching.

To develop the co-curricular activities I organized math exhibitions, seminars, paper presentations, and workshops under the leadership of college professors through which students received good exposure and it enabled them to acquire self-confidence.

I also motivated the students to inculcate social service activities. As I was in charge of extra-curricular activities in Siddhartha school, I organized many bi-cycle rallies, human chains, street plays, choir singing, and processions to give awareness to the public to avoid water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, and land pollution. To save Cauvery, and Bhavani rivers, “Walk along the river bed” and “Lamplight March” programs were organized. To protect forests and wildlife many nature camps, animal watching, bird watching, and trekking programs were conducted in my direction. Many students have become nature lovers through these efforts. Every year on June 5th (Environment Day), November 15th to December 15th (Environment Month), February 2nd (wetland day), September 16th (Ozone Day), October 1st week, Wildlife Week celebration, and many other awareness activities took place without any break under my leadership. To eradicate the child labor system, awareness was given under my guidance making the students participate in the campaign.

Under my guidance students were trained to do many projects such as natural farming, avoid using plastics and junk food, Say No to Drugs, protesting the suicidal tendency, respecting labor, refusing the bribe, etc., The individuality and creativity of the students were enriched by doing these many projects.

I was very concerned about the upliftment of the girl children and women’s welfare. Our town Erode is a business-oriented town, we have many north Indians, especially from the states of Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh those who used to settle down here in our state Tamilnadu. But they failed to give importance and respect to their female education and so, many girls dropped out after 8th and 9th grades, and early marriages were so common among them. I paid keen attention to those students and motivated them by giving them awareness and counseling to avoid early marriages. I used to meet their parents personally and stressed the importance of education. On September 8th (National literacy day), inter-school competitions were conducted for students to bring out their hidden talents and skills. When any community programs were conducted I addressed the gathering to have awareness of the importance of girls’ education, the empowerment of women, and the need to enrich their capabilities and potentialities. I have a magic power through which I made them realize the importance of these needs and wants. Through my continuous efforts and perseverance, I reduced the number of school dropouts by around 90% among the girl children. I played a vital role in making these programs successful. Because of my polite and humble approach, it made everyone understand and realize the real facts. On January 24th during National Girl Child Day, November 25th,  Violence against women day, and March 8th, International Women’s Day, I organized many public awareness programs and campaigns by involving our school girl students participate. This allowed them to commit themselves to what they conveyed to others through their awareness activities.

I organized many workshops on personality development as well. Leading trainers were invited to give orientation on Leadership qualities, Assertiveness, Anger management, Time management, Effective communication, Grief management, Quality living, Being grateful, and etc., National Youth Day on January 12th was celebrated every year in which I motivated the youth of our town to make them self-employed and global citizens. As I had been hosting and conducting many programs on local TV channels, I was able to reach out to 80% of the community in our town through TV programs.

During natural calamities, I insisted the students for rendering their voluntary service to help the affected persons by providing food, dress, and medicines and fulfilling their basic needs and wants by getting help from the public. Every year on December 5th during the International Volunteer Day I insisted the students on the importance of voluntary service.

I used to take my students to orphanage homes, hospitals, senior citizens’ homes, physically challenged person homes, and mentally challenged person homes and made them stay with them for a day to understand their lives and to give life-oriented education to help them in an empathetical way.

Some of the places that I took my students to visit are:

  1. Erode Cancer Center, Perundurai Road, Erode: Erode Cancer Center was established by Dr. Jeevanandham who was the President of Siddhartha School where I was employed as a teacher since 1996. During my employment period in that school, I completely devoted myself to social service by joining hands with Dr.Jeevanandham. Moreover, I also involved my students in social services. I used to take my students to the Erode Cancer Center to help the affected people.
  2. Erode Trust Hospital, Perundurai Road, Erode: This hospital has also been established by Dr.Jeevanandham. The hospital is very popular in our Erode town because of the quality of treatment and very reduced fee structure. I also used to take my students to this hospital to visit and assist the patients therein.
  3. CSI Hospital, Brough Road, Erode: CSI Hospital is associated with CSI School where I did my schooling. I personally visited CSI Hospital very frequently every Sunday after Church service to meet, help, and pray for the patients. I did this service voluntarily as I am a Priest in LDS Church.
  4. Little sisters home, Perundurai, Erode: This is a home for the aged, situated in our town Erode where senior citizens have been admitted. I used to take my students to this home to help and make them happy. As I am a professional singer, I used to sing songs in front of the senior citizens in the home in order to engage them with music.
  5. Eswaran senior citizens home, Perundurai Road, AET School backside, Erode: This home was also established by Dr.Jeevanandham. I used to take my students to this home to render service to the senior citizens of that home. As I have been associated with LDS Charities, I connected LDS Charities with this home and donated lots of needed items such as clothes, food, bedspreads, pillows, paste, toothbrushes and etc.,
  6. Anbu Illam, Erode: This was also one of the senior citizens’ homes located at Erode. Lots of poor and affected people were admitted to that home. So I used to take my students to this home to render the service.
  7. Kongu Arivalayam, Rehabilitation Center for mentally retarded children, Erode: This is a rehabilitation center for mentally retarded children. I took my students to this center many time times, to assist and do the voluntary service.
  8. Nalanda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center for drug addicts: This hospital was established by Dr. Jeevanandham as well. In fact, this is his own hospital in Erode. I used to meet Dr. Jeevanandham most of the time here only. I used to take my students to this hospital as well to render service to the patients. Moreover, as I was doing many programs on local TV Channels, I used to take Dr. Jeevanandham to many different cities of our state to conduct interview programs and awareness programs with Dr. Jeeva to prevent drug addiction. Through these TV programs, I was well-recognized by the people of our state for my selfless service. Many organizations honored me with lots of awards for my social service.

I encouraged my students to donate money, food, clothes, and other needy things during their birthdays or any family occasions. The International Day of physically and mentally challenged People on December 3rd of every year, Orphan Children Day on every 11th of November, and International Volunteers Day on every 5th of December were observed and people related to the days were invited to our school and recognized and appreciated with prizes and awards for their skills and talents they possess. The organizers of those homes were honored with awards to encourage their services. Through these activities, students learned the helping tendency and service mentality. I was very conscious about the moral, ethical, and spiritual values, and the improvement of the children in their school days. I have been giving more importance to the holistic development of each and every student I taught.

Whenever we did these kinds of service projects, we used to document all the details about our programs and submitted them to our District Collector for his consideration and immediate action. I am proud to state that many of the awareness programs and campaigns that I conducted with my students made great impacts on the government to make important decisions. Some of the important decisions made by the Tamilnadu Government as impacts of my programs are as follows:

  1. The Government of Tamilnadu has issued an order against water pollution in the rivers.

2.The child labor system has been completely eradicated in our state Tamilnadu.

3. The Tamilnadu Government’s order for the right of children to free and compulsory education.

4. The Government of India has made an order for the prohibition of child marriage.

5. The Government has issued an order to ban the use of plastic in our state Tamilnadu.

There exists caste discrimination among the people of our state Tamilnadu and it impacts students as well. There are many controversies among the people because of this caste difference. I took the initiative to eradicate this caste discrimination and caste differences among the students so that it might impact the community. So I decided to educate my students in my classes on this issue. Being, a Mathematics teacher at Siddhartha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, I hardly got time to talk to my students on social issues. So I took some extra hours after school hours to talk and educate my students. There were students from different caste backgrounds. I taught all my students to have unity among themselves irrespective of caste, race, and religion. Moreover, I taught my students about national integration. I taught them that we are all human beings in the sight of God and so we should not differentiate people by their caste, race, and religion. I emphasized that caste discrimination is a great disease and should be completely eradicated. So I encouraged all my students to get along among themselves without any caste differences. I also conducted many events that led my students to develop their unity. Moreover, I taught my students about unity in diversity. I taught my students that religion is a personal belief of every single person in the world and we should not fight or make controversies among each other because of religion. For this, I have conducted lots of activities for our students that led them to live a caste-free life. As a result, all of my students were getting along with themselves without any caste difference, and they developed unity among themselves. To an extent, I was able to make a 100% caste-free environment within our Siddhartha school during my employment period. That was one of the great successes I feel I achieved at Siddhartha School. But I wouldn’t say that 100% caste discrimination has been eradicated in our whole state and our country. Still, 30% to 40% of caste discrimination is existing in our country. If I win the Global teacher prize 2021, I will pay more attention to this serious issue and try my level best to eradicate this caste discrimination in our country.

In the year 1996, I established a Maths Club in our school by the name “Ramanujam Math club” in memory of the Great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujam. The Maths genius Srinivasa Ramanujam is the inspiration for my Math world. He was born in our native town Erode.
